These masses of sand stand out from the northwest-southeast trending longitudinal dunes of the regional pattern because they are devoid of vegetation and in detail change in morphology from day to day according to the wind direction. The dunes are demonstrably of recent origin and are developed as a result of the deflation of the A-horizon of a soil formed on the nearby lunette following the clearing of the mallee scrub in 1916.
