It is expected that this Handbook will make a useful contribution to safer living at the village level of Pacific society. It is recognised that building practices vary widely throughout the Pacific, and that the traditional bush house is slowly giving way to hybrid and European-style construction, particularly in the towns. The traditional leaf building is still the most common form of house construction in the villages throughout Melanesia and is likely to remain so for the forseeable future. AODRO is therefore making a significant contribution by devoting its first Disaster-Resistant Construction Handbook to this important type of building
