At foot of title: This is a longer written version of a paper entitled "Citizen Behavior in the Mexico City Earthquake" presented at the 29th International Congress of the International Institute of Sociology held in Rome, Italy, June 16, 1989. Professor Russell R. Dynes and Professor Dennis Wenger participated in the analysis of the larger body of data used in this report. Much of the work reported in this paper was supported by the U.S. national Science Foundation (NSF) under Grant #ECE-8610904. However, all views expressed are those of the author and the Disaster Research Center and do not necessarily reflect the views of the NSF
