The purpose of this research project was to examine how emergency responders provide for pets following disasters. More specifically, this project involved participant observation in the main sheltering facility for pets rescued from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina (2005). The primary research questions were: who volunteers to help animals in a disaster and why? What are the emotional needs of the volunteers, and others, involved in the animal response efforts?
