The guidelines provide indications of what to look for when assessing individual animals in a bushfire. Assessment should be carried out whenever possible in consultation with the stock owner ar agent. Four broad categories are used to group burnt stock: 1. immediate destruction. 2. salvage by slaughter. 3. retain for trestment. 4. return to paddock. Since burnt livestock are likely to be suffering from shock, assessment should be completed as quickly as possible with aminimum of stress to the animal.
