The Illawarra escarpment due to its geomorphological and meteorological environments has a long history of slope instability. Wollongong was subject to high rainfall in July/August 1998. On August 17 there was an intense storm which caused flash flooding, leaving the city isolated for 48 hours, widespread damage, and one death. A State of Emergency was declared. The details of the recovery are contained within this entry.
