Subject: This project describes the development and testing of the Acute Stress Disorder Scale (ASDS). The ASDS was designed to facilitate early identification of people who are at risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTST) by indexing acute reactions to a disaster that are most predictive of longer-term PTSD. The scale has proved to be effective in identifying most people who will develop PTSD, and has opened up opportunities for early intervention to prevet PTSD. Through successful early identification of those at risk of PTSD, the ASDS has resulted in early intervention programs that have resulted in 4 out of 5 people who would have otherwise developed PTSD being treated successfully within weeks of their disaster.
