Community members were dangerously complacent about these disasters before the Maroochy Shire and other emergency organizations ran their 'Disaster Awareness and Preparedness' campaign. The Sunshine Coast have not had a cyclone or severe storm in the last 20 years, although historical records indicate that one is due about every four years. The campaign demonstrated the importance of preparing for these disasters by conducting public lectures, a university research project and presentations to community groups.
