Review: Given the influence of the media on people's attitudes and beliefs, it is important that media representatives understand their subject matter and steer clear of sensationalist or uninformed reporting. Recognising this, the Country Fire Association (CFA) inititated a program to help the media report on bushfire events in a responsible and informed manner, The Media Forum Program had two key objectives: (1) to minimise the risk to media people by raising awareness about risks on the fire ground and presenting strategies to manage those risks, and (2) to encourage accurate media reporting by dispelling myths about why houses burn and why people die in bushfires. The program has made a significant contribution to community safety by ensuring the consistency of media messages with CFA's own communication activities, and by lessening the likelihood of sensational or uninformed reporting. The safety of media representatives has also been improved.
