Entrant : Safer Communities Awards 2000
The North West of New South Wales may be an isolated area with a sparse population, but that doesn't mean safety issues and evacuation plans are being ignored. The NSW State Emergency Service, North West Division, has recently developed a user-friendly evacuation plan for the Croppa Creek Primary School that incorporates the pro-active involvement of all its students. Through drills and explanations the principal and students are educated about how to mitigate the consequences of a number of possible hazards. Evacuation plans have also been developed for the DML Lime Mine in Riverton, South Queensland, as well as for the Attunga DML Lime Mine in New South Wales, which take into consideration the unique topographical features of the region.
