Subject: The detrimental and long-reaching effects of the hailstorm that hit metropolitan Sydney in April 1999 resulted in a request for the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) to assist with the clean-up. What then began was the largest ever movement of SES volunteers, with more than 420 volunteers from 80 VICSES units, as well as 27 staff, required in Sydney. This massive movement of people and vehicles presented many challenges to VICSES, from how to move the people, vehicles and equipment, to how to effectievly brief the staff and volunteers who were unfamiliar with their counterpart's processes. VICSES effectively addressed these challenges and were able to provide an immediate and effective response.
