Subject: Bigger and better surf and sand along the Surfers Paradise Esplanade will be the outcomes of the Northern Gold Coast Beach Protection Strategy (NGCBPS), a strategy which aims to prevent the potentially disastrous effects of coastal erosion during cyclones. The strategy onvolves two main projects: (1) beach nourishment using sand from nearby sources and (2) stabilising the extra sand through the construction of a submerged reef. By adding sand to the natural system, waves then have sufficient materials during cyclones to build protective storm bars in the water. This protects the coast from damage. The submerged reef prevents the loss of the protective buffer, and will also be shaped so as to improve surfing conditions -- an added bonus for local surfers.
