Subject: The stress associated with dealing with a traumatic incident has been recognised by the Victorian State Emergency Service (VICSES) throught its Peer Assistance Link (PAL) program. PAL enables volunteer emergency workers, who may be suffering from post-traumatic stress, to talk to other volunteers who have been exposed to similar experiences. These volunteers have been trained in the basic elements of de-briefing and de-fusing techniques. Since PAL's inception, VICSES has had no claims for workers compensation as a result of any volunteer or staff member suffering post-traumatic stress disorder following a critical incident.
