"25 March 1987".
A fire occurred in a small charcoal filter inside a processing cell, and it was not related to either of the research reactors. Some radioactive contamination escaped into the operating area, and three staff members were exposed to harmless levels of radiation. The majority of the material was trapped by the main filters, and the total amount released was within the limits set by the New South Wales Department of Health's limits. Recommendations have been made to avoid any similar occurrences and to make further improvements of the emergency response.
