Workshop sessions -- Weather hazards and storm surges -- Marine safety and shipping issues -- Climate change and sea-level rise -- Weather forecasting and prediction -- Offshore installations -- Tsunami warning -- Technology transfer, education and training -- Syndicate discussions -- Workshop statement -- workshop recommendation.
The workshop noted the vulnerability of parts of the Indian Ocean region to particular maritime hazards. Broadly these are manifest either as threats to coastal areas through storm surges, floods, tsunamis and tropical cyclones, or to shipping and offshore installations. Problems may be aggravated in the future by the increasing incidence of maritime disasters and higher levels of shipping traffic and offshore resource development. The workshop is of the opinion that regional countries should cooperate to facilitate sustainable development and build the capacity of regional countries for disaster management. This cooperation should include interdisciplinary links between government agencies, academic research institutions, and industry.
