Delatite Shire Council knows all too well the serious social, personal and economic effects of flooding. Following disastrous flooding in 1993, which led to considerable loss of livestock and property, Council knew that the situation had to be improved. A flood warning system was subsequently developed by Council which covers a catchment area of 2600 square kilometres - a system which benefits the residents of Benalla, as well as those in the surrounding areas within the Broken Hill/Holland Creek catchment areas. The flood warning system, which provides an integrated and planned approach to public notification and preparedness in the event of a forthcoming flood, is expected to make a real difference to the losses experienced by flood-affected residents, and may even save lives.
