N.T. winner: Post-disaster Local Government category, Australian Safer Communities Awards (2001) : Katherine Town Council
Following the devastating floods that hit the Northern Territory town of Katherine in 1998, the local council developed a series of plans to deal with future natural disasters. The information was put onto boards that were erected in the local post office, visitor information centre and civic centre. They contained information on where to take pets, cars and caravans in times of floods and advised what to do when leaving your house, what to take and more importantly where to go. Maps showing the location of the emergency evacuation centres and other emergency compounds were also included
