The participants had backgrounds in climatology, climate modelling, insurance, development planning, disaster relief, environmental impact analysis, and policy analysis. The aims of the workshop were to discuss the current knowledge and relevance of issues relating to the incidence and intensity of extreme weather events and to identify specific research questions which are both relevant and manageable. The research is being undertaken in order to provide information for climate change policy considerations, and especially those relating to decision-makers in the governments and the communities of the countries and territories in the South Pacific, as well as the (re)insurance business
