Most local jurisdictions have participated in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) by adopting and enforcing floodplain management ordinances or regulations. The federal government makes NFIP flood insurance and other federal assistance available to residents and businesses, and communities agree to regulate mapped flood hazard areas to reduce future flood damage. With the publication of the International Building Code, the International Residential Code and the rest of the International Code Series (I-Codes) the opportunity exists for communities to integrate building safety and floodplain management
