There is an area of policy work that tends to be neglected; that is how the police organisation reacts to major accidents, natural calamities and other disasters. This paper looks at the policing of disasters, and argues that these extreme events present the police with an acute set of dilemmas and challenges related to organisation response, decision making and accountability.
