"Disaster Studies Project"-- at head of title
Cover title

The major floods which occurred in Northampton and elsewhere during Easter 1998 resulted in tragic loss of life and considerable distress and disruption to people's lives. Learning from Northampton can help improve the disaster management proces in similarly socially diverse urban locations. This paper, coming at the start of a research project into socially inclusive disaster management, will address the importance of understanding the social as well as the 'natural" environment and the need to develop participatory approaches to disaster planning and decision-making for sustainable flood management.
