This case study is based on the largest oil spill which has occurred in the Komi Republic (Northern European Russia) during August to September in 1994 (so-called the Usinsk accident). The case study presents the environmental consequences of this industrial accident and the response from official governmental bodies and non-governmental organisations (NGO) on the industrial accident which caused serious environmental damage. The Usinsk accident was one of the world's largest oil spills : with estimates of the size of the spill from 12,000 to 200,000 tonnes of oil. The Usinsk accident has been chosen as a case study because accidents concerning oil and gas pipelines cause severe environmental impact and are very common in Russia at the present time.
