This article is part of a series featuring interviews with founders of traditions in the study of hazards and disasters. Dynes and Quarantelli established the Disaster Research Center in 1963 at Ohio State University, then went on to pioneer a distinctive intellectual path that has been followed by successive generations of disaster scholars for almost 40 years. This conversation took place at a special session of the Annual Natural Hazards Workshop in Boulder, Colorado, July 11-14, 1999
