The workshop aimed to raise awareness and understanding of volcanic hazards and their impacts on Savo Volcano at a management level; to show how future volcanic activity may affect the development of Savo, Honiara and surrounds; to develop approaches for reducing the vulnerability of the population, its livelihoods, infrastructure and supporting services; to raise awareness of specific volcanic hazard emergency management requirements; to develop emergency management plans in the form of an Operational Support Plan for volcanic activity on Savo that harmonises with national disaster plans; to promote activities toward developing specific organisation preparedness; to demonstrate the preparation of volcanic hazard maps from geological information; to develop recommendations for an appropriate monitoring and warning system for Savo; to develop appropriate awareness strategies for Savo and surrounding population; to demonstrate community awareness methodologies on Savo for volcanic hazard preparedness; to examine issues of possible permanent or long-term resettlement of Savo Islanders in the event of renewed volcanic activity
