The Major Hazards Safety Service, through a professional review and audit process, monitors the satisfactory fulfilment of these obligations. It also provides a hazard identification and risk assessment review service for State and local government agencies involved with land use planning. For example, the service can advise whether the risks involved with siting a new or modified MHF comply with nationally recognised and established risk criteria. The Major Hazards Safety Service is responsible for: monitoring the implementation of the legislation; training of mult-agency whole of Government teams; collection, analysis and dissemination of data regarding MHF's; development and delivery of awareness-raising programs and information and guidance materials, and liaison with stakeholders.
