Entrant : Safer Communities Awards 2004. National Winner - Local Government Stream. Post-Disaster Category.
The Rural City of Wangaratta and surrounding districts have been in the grip of well below average rainfall since 1995, this and hot dry summers and bushfires in the northeast at the start of 2003 has led to the Rural City of Wangaratta and neighbouring councils being declared as official drought declared areas on the 24th of January 2003. This allowed access to crucial drought relief funding by the state government. This has also led to close cooperation between several state and local agencies with the formation of a Drought Sub-Committee of the Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee. This committee has been instrumental in sourcing and allocating funds to provide relief to farming communities throughout the municipality.
