A brief overview of what happened during the first month after the Hyogoken-nambu earthquake of January 17, 1995, in terms both of the emergency responses initiated and the societal impact. Formal organization responses are discussed. Search and rescue efforts of the Kobe Fire Department and fire suppression activities are reviewed. Also discussed are the post-quake emergence of a voluntary building damage assessment program and (in terms of the societal impact), deaths and injuries, provision of shelters and related housing measures
