Australia is prone to many and varied natural hazards. Amongst these are included the swirling winds which develop in strength to form cyclones and periods of prolonged dry which can signal the onset of drought. Cyclones are the result of the intensification of low pressure systems and impact on both the natural and human environments. When people experience a prolonged dry period without enough water for their normal needs a drought is identified. The impact of drought is evident on both natural and human environments. Living in particular parts of Australia, the risk of experiencing a cyclone or a drought should be apparent to the residents. Both hazards arrive with some regularity and offer people the chance to be prepared, to take precautionary action and to respond in a manner which reduces the impact of the natural event. This resource has been written and developed for geography teachers and students at the lower secondary level. It provides an understanding of cyclones and droughts, increasing the awareness about the threat of these events to people and the environment. As many people live in or near an area prone to each hazard, it is important that they become aware of the actions that can be taken to reduce the damage and impacts of an event. This resource, in two sections, develops the ideas through the key inquiry questions on each topic. Each section provides textual information about a key question along with maps, diagrams, photographs and statistics
