This research examines women's class position, experiences of floods and daily activities in and out of floodtime. The mainstream academic portrayal of rural women as handicaps in disaster theory and as passive and subservient to men is also examined. This thesis emphasises women's efforts to push gender boundaries to their limits to make disaster their domain as well as the lack of recognition of their contribution.
