The inclusion of older people in disaster and development programmes, and recognition of their contribution, will contribute to more equitable social relations and support the development of democratic and participatory communities. Principles of problem solving through participation and self-advocacy should be at the centre of any activities and there must be greater equality of access for older people to services aware of their needs and their value as active community members.
