Significant initiatives are under way to minimize the impacts from coastal hazards through better preparedness and a more informed public. To reduce the number of lives lost and the amount of property damaged in United States coastal areas, methods for predicting hazard events and impacts, mobilizing the public to move out of harm's way, and reducing overall exposure and vulnerability in the highest hazard locations are being improved.
