Subject: The Great Hanshin Awaji Eathquake struck Hyogo prefecture in Japan on January 17th 1995, forcing 310,000 homeless survivors to evacuate to 1,000 temporary shelters. Psychiatric problems were common, especially during the night and ad hoc psychiatric emergency services were established. These services provided relief to the homeless as well as to medical and nonmedical volunteers and prevented unnecessary admissions to psychiatric hospitals during the postquake period.
