Subject: On August 17, 1999 Kocaeli region of Turkey was rocked for 45 seconds by one of the most devasting earthquakes of the 20th century. Over 15,600 people died, more than 50,000 were injured and more than 500,000 were made homeless. About 18,000 buildings were destroyed and 8,000 industries were severely affected.
