It is estimated that 50% of all people suffering a heat attack do not survive. Emergency treatment in the first 1-2 hours can reduce the death rate by 50 % and can reduce damage to the heart muscle. Angioplasty is the recommended treatment for heart attack. In Canberra, it is available in the cardiac catheter laboratory at one of the two public hospitals, the Canberra Hospital and Calvary Health Care hospital. Since late 2007, paramedics now transmit clinical information via the mobile phone network to TCH. The cardiac catheter laboratory team is prepared for the patients arrival and treatment can commence immediately. Patients transfer time for treatment has dropped from 72 hours to 38 hours.
