Subject: When a ragged gang of thunderstorms boiled out of western Africa in September and merged into a 600-mile-wide aerial maelstrom called Hurricane Floyd, the devastation in North Carolina was horrific. Up to twenty inches of rain cascaded onto the eastern part of the state, flooding fields already drenched and waterways already swollen by Dennis just two weeks earlier. At least 48 North Carolinians died. Thousands of homes were flooded - 3680 utterly wrecked and 4280 badly damaged. More than 48,000 people were crowded into 235 shelters. Hospitals and health departments were running out of tetanus and diphtheria vaccines. Some 2.3 million acres of crops were destroyed
