Entrant of Safer Community Awards 2010
The Emergency Alert project team, led by the Office of the Emergency Services Commissioner (Vic), worked in partnership with the community, the private sector, state and federal governments and agencies to deliever Australia's first telephone emergency warning system in December 2009. Emergency Alert allows the emergency services to send life-saving messages via mobile and landline phones to targeted communities, helping build community resilience through timely intervention. The project involved a high level of technological innovation and a significant amount of engagement with the comunity and the emergency services, delivering the system successfully under tight timelines and engendering a high level of community awareness and support. Emergency services have already used Emergency Alert to send thousands of messages on a range of hazards.
