Summary: On Christmas Eve 1974, Darwin was hit by the largest natural disaster seen to date, Cyclone Tracy. Cyclone Tracy was responsible for winds up to 217km/h, destroyed nearly 70% of houses, killed 65 people and injured 500. In 12 hours it dropped 250 mm of rain, the diameter of the eye was recorded at 12 km and left a bill of up to $800 million (1974$'s). As Darwin has always been prone to natural disasters and Darwin City Council (DCCC) is committed to working together with businesses, organisations and the community to ensure that all residents are aware, alert and ready. In 2008 DCC implemented a new program to assist in the management of a disaster. Guardian is an innovative program that allows the users a complete database to track, monitor and respond to all aspects of natural disasters.
