(3z(BAfter the Emergency is an interactive activity book developed to assist children to better understand and articulate their emotions following an emergency. The resource encourages children to reflect on what has happened and to be aware of and to better cope with their feelings in the days and months that follow an emergency. It encourages children to talk about the event and seek help and support from those around them. The resource is designed for primary school children and is not hazard specific, so it can be used by children following any emergency. The resource has been designed to be visually engaging, featuring bright colours and cartoon characters who talk children through their thoughts and feelings before the event, as well as their vision and hopes for the future. The resource includes colouring activities, stickers and puppets designed to engage young children and ensure an interesting and varied experience. The resource also includes information for parents, guardians, carers or teachers, including basic tips to assist them when talking to children who have experienced an emergency. It has been developed in consultation with a child psychologist, primary school teachers and school counsellors to ensure the content is appropriate and useful for children. To date in 2009, Red Cross has distributed the resource to Victoria?s bushfire-affected communities; throughout northern Queensland and the Sunshine Coast; in northern New South Wales during floods; and in Bunbury in Western Australia during a recent tornado. It was made readily available through relief centres, outreach visits to homes, at community events and through schools.' -- Website.
