Summary: "The 'Ferny Creek fire alert siren trial Project' was initiated from the State Coroner's recommendations into the inquest of the three people who dies as a result of the 1997 Ferny Creek fire on Janury 21 1997 (1998), and the concerns expressed by Ferny Creek resident about the lack of eary warning received. a number of residents living in the Ferny Creek area, where the 1997 fires caused most damage, expressed their concerns, to local government and the CFA, that the local CFA fire siren was unable to be heard in their particular location of Ferny Creek. This concern prompted a small group of residents to lobby all levels of government and the media for the installation of a CFA type siren which could be audible to residents within the identified area of Ferny Creek at a time that could provide some form of 'early warning'. CFA, in response to the community's correspondance and campaign, stated that it did not support the use of a siren as a warning system. CFA met with community groups in an attempt to explain their position but this process was reported as unsuccessful. The continuing public debate, lobbying and a review into the State Coroner's recommendations of 1998 by the Office of the Emergency Services Commissioner, within the Department of Justice, prompted the Shire of Yarra Ranges to set up a working group to explore the concept of an early warning system and to work toward the trialing of a system which might address the residents' concerns." -- p. 4-5.
