Review: The District of Exmouth is located 1270km from Perth on the tip of the North West Cape of Western Australia, it has an area of 6,261kmø and is classified as ?Very Remote Australia? under the Australian Census classification of remoteness. Exmouth was originally constructed in 1964 as a support town for the United States Naval Communications Station Harold E Holt. Although Exmouth has a resident population of 2,063 in the period April to October, annually the numbers swell to approximately 6,000 with the influx of many tourists that travel north for the climate. Exmouth faces many potential natural disasters such as floods, bushfires and cyclones. Of particular note was Cyclone Vance in 1999 which destroyed over 112 homes and businesses and caused $35 million worth of damage. In 2002 the area was affected by floods causing widespread damage and sinking boats in the Marina as well as bushfires which burnt almost the length of Cape. Exmouth is also susceptible to man-made emergencies such as oil spills within the Marina and from the numerous oil rigs off the coast. Vehicle accidents are becoming more frequent particularly with the transient population during tourist season. The purpose of the community based Emergency Risk Assessment is to form the basis of the Community Emergency Arrangements and to identify risks, sources of risk, risk treatment options and develop risk treatment plans within the community. The Emergency Risk Management process has been integrated with the Exmouth Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) Annual Business Plan to work towards achieving the LEMC?s vision ?to foster a safer, sustainable community by creating an informed and involved local community using the ?all hazard? approach to emergency management?.
