In November 1997, the Melbourne Airport, and other various emergency and welfare organisations, conducted a training exercise called "Pax in Black" where a unit of emergency services volunteers from the ARCV participated. Volunteers performed a support role to the "walking wounded" and their families which was found to be valuable. Further training would be necessary for this intense role and since this was a new area of service provision, the aim of this research is to influence the development of appropriate training for Australian Red Cross volunteers.
