Subject: In December 2001 to January 2002 bushfires raged across the north, west and southern borders of the Wollondilly Local Government Area. The main villages impacted by these fires were Burragorang, Bargo, Appin, Thirlmere, The Oaks, Oakdale, Yanderra and in particular Warragamba/Silverdale. Fortunately of the eleven villages prepared for evacuation, only five were fully evacuated. Approximately 40 houses and 12 businesses were totally lost due to the fires and a considerable number of homes and property suffered varying degrees of damage. In total 68,000 hectares of property was burnt and hundreds of people directly or indirectly affected. Remarkably there was no loss of life.
