Subject: During the evening hours of Wednesday, April 14, 1999, a fierce hailstorm raged through the suburbs of Sydney, causing an estimated insured loss of A$1.2 billion. Hailstones of up to 9cm smashed thousands of roofs, windows and skylights, shattered scores of automobile windows and dented countless car panels. One fisherman died when lightning struck his aluminum boat, and numerous people were injured by falling hailstones and shattered glass. After the Storm had passed, the ground was strewn with masses of broken tiles, glass, leaves and twigs, and numerous live wires and trees were down. The storm ended up being the largest insured loss for a single event disaster in Australia's history
