Entrant : Safer Communities Awards 2002
The "Science of the Surf" project was a series of free seminars offered during the 2002 summer and was initiated by the Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club and club member Dr Robert Brander of the University of New South Wales. The motivation for the seminars was to improve the knowledge of not only the community, but also the international community with regard to beach safety. This attempt was made by educating the public on the basic science behind a "how beaches work" in order to provide a fundamental understanding from which potential hazards and dangerous conditions could be judged and assessed by the individual.
