Subject: The Coastal Cliff Hazard Strategy was developed in response to the outcomes from the Grace Town Disaster. The disaster occurred on 27 September 1996 when a cliff collapsed on a group of interschool surfers sheltering from a storm. Nine people were killed and one was injured. The subsequent Coroner's report identified the need for "coastal local governments are required to provide a level of care and management for limestone cliff hazards within their boundaries and should adopt or develop cliff management policies".
