Entrant: Safer Communities Awards 2002
After the disastrous floods of February 2001, Lismore City Council undertook to review its flood response procedures. Recognising that a greater emphasis was needed on local flood preparedness, council undertook to launch a new public awareness campaign aimed at updating residents on flood evacuation and safety procedures. Flood Awareness Week was held on the anniversary of the floods and attracted support from more than a dozen agencies and significant media attention. It helped agencies generate interest in floods, produced support, including new volunteers for organisations, and has left the community better able to deal with emergencies.
