The Community Awareness and Preparedness System (CAPS) is an email based public information system designed to provide residents of the high wildfire risk areas of Nillumbik with medium-term (i.e. 1-5 days) information regarding the wildfire threat. A co-ordinated approach between Council and the CFA was taken to collect and disseminate accurate and relevant information to the community. Information is collected from a variety of sources including Council, CFA, DNRE, and Bureau of Meteorology; translated if necessary into a form readily understood by the community; and re-broadcast through an email mail group to Community Fireguard members.
