Although different in magnitude and impacts, the Hanshin and Northridge earthquakes provide major opportunities for improving our understanding of earthquake recovery processes. The goal of the Center-to-Center effort is to use the lessons learned following these two major urban earthquakes to identify and formulate post-earthquake reconstruction strategies that will shorten the recovery period, improve the seismic resistance of the built environment, contain recovery costs, and have cross-societal applicability
