Recent revisions of estimates for the probable maximum flood in Australia exceed, for a number of dams, the nationally-accepted safety limits. Decisions to re-design these dams, and undertake the costly remedial works, require an assessment of the losses that would occur due to failure of the existing structures. A major component of such losses is the direct damage to buildings and contents. These were assessed for Queanbeyan, situated downstream of the federally-owned Googong Dam in New South Wales.
