"Fire on ships" --Cover
In: Port of Fremantle, Winter 1983
The greatest threat to operations in the history of the Port of Fremantle came during World War II, not from enemy action but by an accident. A disastrous fire broke out at no. 8 Berth North Wharf and quickly engulfed the Panamanian, before spreading to the Royal Navy submarine depot ship, the Maidstone. The fire damage bill included one fatality, $50,000 to repair the wharf, $1,000,000 damage to the Panamanian and its cargo and the loss of valuable fire-fighting equipment
